My need for a good rss aggregator is important. I depend on it to help me stay current on everything Ubuntu and Linux for the UWN. I had used the Sage addon in Firefox for about a year, but with the Hardy release using Firefox3, Sage was not available. A shame, because I really liked Sage, it allowed me to have my reader integrated with my browser. I finally have settled on Liferea. It’s a stand alone application that is simple, but very configurable. If you’re looking for a good rss feed reader to replace Sage, you might take a look at it.

I use the google reader as my RSS reader, In the ubuntu repository there is the Mozilla Prism for Google Reader.

I went from Sage to WizzRSS to Google Reader, and Reader really got me hooked. Worth a try. One thing I like in particular is the mobile version.

Myself i’m using Brief for Firefox. Does everything Google Reader does without needing to go to google reader.
Also bonus, being able to backup your item database.
Liferea seems nice, but i dislike the email-like interface. I like my items appearing in a simple list one after the other, no clicking involved.

I clearly prefer an online rss reader like netvibes because you can quickly have an overview of the new entries.
But if you know a good application doing this, I will be pleased to know.

I’m using Goolge Reader. One of the advantages over desktop aggregators is that you can read your news from multiple computers without loosing sync, and that was the selling point for me.
Firefox has support for it, in the form that when you click on RSS icon, you can choose to use Google Reader (among others).

I’m using the liferea at the moment, it’s nice and very configurable, but just turn your sys monitor and see how much resource does it waste…So i consider it would be a temporary decision for me till i found a proper and lighter one.
have a lot of fun…:)

Why not use an online feed reader like bloglines or google reader? I personally use google reader which has a lot of nice features, and allows me to access it everywhere I go.

Did you tried Google Reader ? It’s really useful if you need to check your feeds from different computers.
May 20, 2008 at 3:41 am
Dunno if you’ve tried it but I’m using google reader. I used to use Akregator but after loosing a hdd I decided to move this to an external source.
I am pretty happy with it…
Hope that helps…

The real advantage to using something like google reader is you can pick up at home or at the office without having to mark entries as read.
Though, I’m holding out for a nice python curses reader (no, snownews won’t cut it).

One of the SoC project this year is (read and write) support for Google Reader in Liferea. Best of both worlds!

I use netvibes.com daily, give it a try

I always liked Akregator, but then I discovered that the only really good RSS aggregator is Google Reader. I can access it from any computer, and it integrates really nicely with FF without the need for an extension. I can share feed stories that I like easily, and get “friend feeds” of stories my Gmail contacts share from their Google Reader accounts.

Sage has been picked up, cleaned up and rewritten for Firefox 3. I’m runnng it right now, on Hardy:

I don’t think you can go past Google Reader (http://reader.google.com/). In typical Google style it is very fast and efficient. I can access it from any computer and it has a very friendly mobile edition (http://www.google.com/reader/m/view/). It’s search function is very handy and I can find & subscribe to new feeds very quickly.

I use Thunderbird for my text feeds and Rhythmbox for my audio podcasts. I would love for Totem to have the same RSS functionality that Rhythmbox has, for video podcasts. Yeah, I know about Miro, but it just doesn’t have some of the basic functions yet, like removing an entry without having to download it first.

I’m already using liferea for more than an year and i’m very happy with it. I use it both on my desktop and my laptop and when i’m away i sync the .liferea_1.4 and i have all news with read status and everything

FYI, there’s now a revived fork of Sage by the Wizz-RSS guys:

I grew discontent over Liferea, never have liked Sage, and moved over to RSSOwl. It’s made in Java, and fits my personal use perfectly. http://rssowl.org/

I’ve had good luck with bloglines. Since it’s a remote site, I can use it from multiple machines without having to copy configuration all over the place.
May 20, 2008 at 7:17 am
Just change the install.rdf of the add-on to 3.0, almost all add-ons will work.
May 20, 2008 at 7:17 am
If you haven’t tried it yet, give a try to google reader. It allows you to read your news really quickly.
May 20, 2008 at 7:18 am
the maxversion btw
.

There is always Google Reader. It’s got a good interface, it’s all online, and you can share items with friends easily. Lifera has a GSOC project to sync Reader with it’s own feed list (useful to maintain read status).
May 20, 2008 at 8:30 am
Have you tried online aggregator, such as netvibes?
May 20, 2008 at 9:07 am
I’ve been using Google Reader for a while now, and I highly recommend it. Sometimes I read my rss feeds from work, and sometimes from home. I like being able to check my feeds from anywhere and not have to sync anything up to know what I’ve already read elsewhere.

The good news is that there is a shiny new port of the old unmaintained Sage to Firefox 3, it works with FF 3b5 and RC1, and is already in Mozilla’s sandbox repository for extensions. It includes several features long missed in Sage.
The name is Sage-Too.
This is the development blog:

This is the mozilla add-on link to sage-too:

Enjoy…

Thanks for all the great comments folks!! I’ll certainly check on all of them.

I use Liferea on my Hardy box, and I love it. And, when I am away from my Linux box, I use Google Reader. Both are slick.
May 21, 2008 at 7:56 pm
It’s all right, johnc4510. _I_ understand. And someday Sage-Too will stop throwing errors, and we can BOTH download it.
May 21, 2008 at 8:06 pm
lol, it could happen. hee hee

I found a nice RSS aggregator. You can find it on the http://www.rss-aggregator.com website.
July 13, 2008 at 7:51 pm
I don’t know if it’ll help you, but I wanted a quick page I could go to that aggregated topical RSS feeds, but I couldn’t really find anything, so . . . like any good geek . . . I wrote one. It may not have what you want yet, but I’ll be adding RSS feeds as I find them. I’ll add some *nix ones just for you if you’ll use it.

Patrick, that would be great. I’ll bookmark it and check back once a week.

Hey John,
I put some more of my favorite feeds up there. More to come. Let me know if you have any suggestions for the style or layout too. I’m trying to make it easy to read and intuitive to peruse.

Like I said, most of those pull from the same feeds. Basically the page will pull an equal number of articles from up to 5 feeds and display them pseudo-randomly so as I add feeds, you’ll get different articles from each page.
