I recently decided to add a second monitor to my system. I had a nice 20″ Samsung 206BW that was a couple of years old. Like any piece of hardware, it was no longer available, so I could not match up two of that particular monitor. So I stepped up to a 23″ Samsung 2333SW, and I am not disappointed. The resolutions are close, the 20″ is 1680×1050, and the 23″ is 1920×1080, so the pixel heights are reasonably close.

Set-up in Ubuntu Jaunty was a breeze with Nvidia-Settings twinview. It actually didn’t take any more time to set up twinview than it did to unpack and hook up the monitor. Probably 10-15 minutes for the whole process. Note: Be sure to use sudo nvidia-settings instead of just launching from the GUI, or your settings won’t save.

It is great having such a large expanse of desktop to work on now. I can spread out and move application from screen to screen. I also found a great website for widescreen wallpapers: InterfaceLIFT. It has great wallpapers in lots of different resolutions.

Anyone contemplating adding a extra monitor should take the plunge, it’s definitely worth it. Kind of like going from dial up to broadband…you wonder why you waited so long.

I uploaded a larger screenshot here

My set-up!
